What a GFCI Is Actually Doing
A ground-fault circuit interrupter constantly compares the current flowing out on the hot wire to the current returning on the neutral wire. If even a tiny amount — as little as a few milliamps — is leaking somewhere it shouldn't, like through water, a person, or damaged insulation, the GFCI cuts power in a fraction of a second. That's a very different job than a regular breaker, which only reacts to overloads or short circuits.
Because GFCIs are so sensitive, they trip for reasons that have nothing to do with a dangerous overload. That sensitivity is the whole point near sinks, tubs, and outdoor outlets, but it also means nuisance trips happen more often than with standard outlets, especially in older or moisture-prone homes near the shore.
Common Causes Near the Coast
Salt air and humidity are hard on electrical connections. Outdoor and bathroom GFCIs in shore homes see more corrosion inside the outlet box, more condensation, and more moisture intrusion around covers than the same devices would inland. Corroded wire connections or a cracked weatherproof cover can let just enough moisture in to cause a leakage path.
Other frequent culprits include a worn appliance cord, a hair dryer or space heater with internal moisture, a long extension cord run outdoors, or simply a GFCI device that's aged out — most have a useful life and can become oversensitive or fail to reset cleanly after years of service.
- Multiple outlets trip together (they're on the same GFCI-protected circuit)
- Trips only when a specific appliance is plugged in
- Trips more often in wet weather or high humidity
- Won't reset at all, or resets and trips again within seconds
What You Can Check Yourself
Start simple: unplug everything on that circuit, press reset, then plug items back in one at a time to isolate the source. Check the outlet cover for cracks or missing gaskets on outdoor units, and make sure nothing is stored where it could get rained on near an exterior receptacle. If a specific appliance consistently causes the trip, retire that cord rather than fighting it.
If the outlet feels warm, shows scorch marks, or the reset button feels loose or doesn't click firmly, stop testing and treat it as an electrical issue rather than a nuisance. Those are signs of a failing device or a wiring problem behind the wall, not something to keep resetting.
When to Call a Licensed Electrician
If the trips happen with nothing plugged in, if you smell burning, or if the outlet is warm to the touch, that points to a wiring fault or a failing device that needs a licensed electrician's diagnosis rather than trial and error. Persistent trips on an outdoor circuit after storms can also mean water has reached a splice or box that needs to be opened up and inspected properly.
A handyman can often replace an aging GFCI outlet itself once the cause is understood to be the device, but any troubleshooting inside the wiring, panel, or a circuit with a genuine ground fault is licensed electrical work.
